3 out of 5 stars Olympus Stylus Tough 8010   September 7, 2010
David L. Van Amburg (Puyallup, WA)
This thing is really built rugged and the compartment door (now only 1 door)has been improved. We bought this camera to replace a Stylus 770SW that went swimming with the battery door open. Fried everything. The new camera is poorly documented out of the box, so it will take a long time to figure out settings and just what it can do. I need a hard copy manual that I can touch as I'm learning and refreshing my memory on settings. Don't have it with the new camera. The battery and media has changed and now takes a different battery and charger than the old camera and it uses SD instead of XD media. I have no preference to either battery or media but dislike the fact that Olympus changed it. Now we need to maintain both types of media and batteries. The 8010 so far, is real slow at capturing shots and even slower recovering. I'm going to miss a lot of pictures with this camera. The video function has improved in that to shoot a video now it is a one step process that requires only pressing the red button on the back. You do not have to change settings to video mode as with the older camera. I am learning but I am not as pleased with the new camera as I was with the 770SW. We sent the old camera into Olympus service center and they repaired it and returned it just like new for $115. Happy days, now the new one can be a back up.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Image Quality, Inconsistent Exposure, Overpriced   September 3, 2010
CNJ2000
I purchased this camera as replacement for my Olympus 770SW-- which by the way, performed very well. The Stylus Tough 8010, however, produces inferior photos. Even when using the flash indoors, the resulting photos tend to come out underexposed-- even after using the exposure compensation. I took five photos on a tripod with the same composition with both fill flash on and with auto flash on. In all instances the flash fired but the exposure for the photos varied. There obivously is a pre-flash built in the camera and this may be causing the camera to misread/miscalculate exposure. Also, indoors under incandescent lighting, if you use auto White Balance any white has a blue tint. If you use the incandescent setting for WB, EVERYTHING COMES OUT AN UNNATURAL BLUE.

It seems that the trend for camera companies is to add impressive features, gimmicks, etc. aimed at the novice photographer rather than focusing on actual image quality.

The camera is slow on resetting after taking a pitcher and doesn't stay on the last setting when power is turned off. Other than that I'm very pleased with the camera

4 out of 5 stars Give it a chance...   August 25, 2010
Ryan Snow (ANchorage, AK)
When I first bought this I almost immediately returned it to the store. I had many complaints that have already been posted here. Slow speed, grainy photos.... I took this out on a three week trip to the brooks range and shot about 400 pictures with it and about 20 vids. The more I shot with it the better my pictures got. I will admit it does take some getting use to and knowing what setting to use in each photo. The Auto setting work so so. And the Auto focus is not the fastest either. But one thing to keep in mind is this is a ruggedized piece of equipment which means there is going to be extreme sacrifices at one end of the spectrum to gain on the other. In the end I turned out to be happy with this camera.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this camera   August 23, 2010
MrDaveyGie
I am very disappointed in this camera. Using it's features is awkward. It doesn't work in cold weather, the battery goes dead when it is cold out. I dropped it from 4 feet and the little flap for cabling broke off so it is no longer weather proof. Picture quality is poor.
